Pure-Blue-Japan-Introduces-Their-Vintage-Series-with-the-XX-013-VTG-Front-Back

Pure Blue Japan is taking a journey in the denim time machine with their latest release, the XX-013-VTG. If the double X’s and “VTG” moniker didn’t give it away, this is the brands interpretation of what is safely recognized as the most iconic pair of jeans in history, the original Levi’s 501.

They knew that if they were going for authentic, they needed the denim to match, and developed an exclusive 14oz. unsanforized Japanese denim featuring PBJ’s signature super slub, which means a more balanced and tight, even weave like those old jeans you find in your grandparent’s attic.

The least vintage part of this release is the fit, a modest slim taper with a mid rise and narrow leg openings. Other details include a pink selvedge ID, lambskin leather patch, and custom PBJ hardware.

Available for $230 at Okayama Denim.

Fade Friday – Pure Blue Japan X011 (1.5 Year, 4 Washes)

Left-hand twill? Check. Grey weft? Check. Serious fades? Check. Fade Friday is here and we’ve brought you some well-worn, yet slightly unconventional, jeans to sate your fades thirst. This week’s pair is a Pure Blue Japan x011 that comes to us courtesy of Hef, a native of Brighton, England.

Hef wore these jeans during the evening and on weekends only for the past two years and in that time gave them four washes. What’s more, he’s an avid cyclist and wore these while biking around town, though he abstained from wearing them on long hauls. No doubt all that pedaling is what led to the sharp contrast on the whiskers and honeycombs, something that is a bit harder to achieve with the rather watery fading of left-hand twill.

The grey weft has also given these jeans an interesting cast; one might wonder if they started black, but they display enough blue to keep one guessing. There’s nice puckering on the seams for so few washes, and PBJ’s distinctive raised belt loops have worn down to white nicely. The eagle-eyed among us might also espy the back pockets’ raised openings, which have fades of their own. A superb effort all around, and worthy of being another classic Fade Friday.

If you like your jeans tight and you like them slubby, there aren’t many options that don’t encase your legs like irregular indigo sausages. Cult Japanese brand Pure Blue Japan recognizes your needs and has added a whopping 5% stretch to their KS-013-ST 16oz. Knubbed Stretch Selvedge Jeans.

Five percent may not sound like a lot, but most stretch jeans top out at two, making these the heaviest, stretchiest, slubbiest, while still selvedg-est jeans we’ve seen yet. They retain all the details of the all cotton Knub Selvedge jean like the lambskin leather patch, roped belt loops, and custom branded hardware but add in the new fabric.

Squeeze into a pair for $260 at Okayama Denim.

When you wear the same pair of jeans every day of the week until they are thrashed so hard that they physically cannot be worn any longer, it’s time to make a choice. Either get a new pair of jeans or hand them off to the denim experts for surgery. Tyler from Indigo Proof was kind enough to give us the full story on this pair of Pure Blue Japan XX-015‘s.

All truths told we have actually featured this pair of jeans before. You would never know it though as they have gone through such major structural changes in the last year alone that they look like a completely different pair of jeans.

The photos you see now were taken before and after their third trip in for repairs, and if you look closely you might find more darning and stitching than actual denim. The fades are heavy throughout, and there’s no doubt in my mind that this owner isn’t throwing in the towel anytime soon. Denim Frankenstein lives!
